FSSAI regulations on speciality food containing botanical ingredients

Speciality foods containing plant or botanical ingredients with a safe usage history are categorized as Nutraceuticals in India. According to the Food Safety Standard Authority of India (FSSAI), nutraceuticals include those products that contain plant or botanical ingredients.

The FSSAI defines nutraceuticals as “A product derived from food sources with additional health benefits in addition to the basic nutritional value found in food”. These products are formulated to supplement the diet with one or more specific nutrients, non-nutrient substances or naturally occurring bioactive compounds that have health benefits.

Other terms for nutraceuticals include:

  • Health supplement,
  • Food for special dietary use,
  • Food for special medical purposes, and
  • Functional food

These products must comply with the safety and quality standards set by the FSSAI and undergo proper testing and labelling before being marketed.

  1. Where necessary, the formulation of food items must be based on sound medical or nutritional principles and supported by verified scientific data.
  2. The product should be devoid of hormones, steroids or psychotropic ingredients.
  3. The label on the nutraceutical must specify the target audience, intended use or the physiological or disease conditions and the duration of consumption.
  4. Detailed instructions, precautions and the nature and purpose of the nutraceutical must be stated on the label or leaflet accompanying the nutraceutical [1].
