Evidence showed that functional foods, nutraceuticals and supplemental micronutrients have the capability to lower cancer cell growth, induce cancer cell apoptosis, and inhibit cell proliferation. For instance, carotenoids promote gap-junctional communication; flavonoids modulate phase I and II xenobiotic detoxification; curcumin, resveratrol, and berberine have been shown to reduce cancer cell growth. Similarly, other phytochemical compounds from curcumin, red pepper and ginger suppress the pathway of nuclear transcription factor-kB that correlated with cancer.
