PepsiCo’s Starbucks drink recalled over potential metal fragment contamination

Products Recalled: 

PepsiCo Inc. has issued a recall for its Starbucks Vanilla Espresso Triple Shot beverage 15-ounce sizes which were marketed in seven states of the U.S. The cold canned beverages are being removed from the shelves. Even though the recall was initiated on august 15, 2022, it was made public on the F.D.A. site on September 8 2022. The F.D.A. did not issue a full press statement, but an enforcement report is available on its website.


Problem: The recall was initiated due to possible contamination of foreign materials. A total of 221 cases containing 12 cans were recalled. Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Texas are among the seven states in which the recall was initiated. Despite its Starbucks branding, the product is supplied by PepsiCo Inc., a company that produces a variety of food, snack, and beverage products.


Scientific Evidence: Metal pieces ingestion might result in damage to the consumer. Dental injury, laceration of the mouth or throat, or laceration or perforation of the gut are all possible risks.

What does regulation clarify:

  • The F.D.A.’s Health Hazard Evaluation Board has recommended regulatory action against items containing metal pieces ranging in size from 0.3 inches (7 mm) to 1 inch (25 mm)
  • The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the FFD&C Act) forbid the interstate transportation of contaminated foods (21 U.S.C. 331).
  • Food containing foreign objects is deemed adulterated under the FFD&C Act (21 U.S.C 342). Section 555.425 of the F.D.A.’s “Compliance Policy Guide.” Furthermore, foreign objects smaller than 0.3 inches (7 mm) may cause trauma or significant harm to those in high-risk categories, such as babies, surgery patients, and the elderly.
