Job Function/Role Summary:
As a Formulation Developer at FRL, your primary responsibility is to create, optimize, and maintain pet food formulations, specifically in Dry and Care & Treats products, that meet nutritional standards, comply with regulatory requirements, and deliver key attributes relevant to both pets and consumers. Your role involves utilizing scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and industry insights to develop high-quality, safe, and palatable pet food products that enhance the health and well-being of pets. This position supports FRL’s contract manufacturing operations and ensures that products meet the highest standards across our manufacturing network.
Required Qualification:
A degree in a natural science discipline, preferably in Food Technology, Pet Nutrition, or equivalent related experience.
Required Experience:
Industry Experience: Prior experience in food and beverage product development within a commercial setting is preferred, especially in tailoring products to meet specific client requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Recipe Formulation & Optimization: Oversee and optimize pet food recipes across multiple production facilities, ensuring that formulations meet client requirements for cost, quality, and performance while maintaining food safety standards.
- Nutritional Compliance: Ensure that all pet food formulations within your area of responsibility are nutritionally compliant with industry standards and client specifications.
- Continuous Improvement: Regularly review and optimize existing formulations to enhance cost-efficiency, product quality, and performance. Implement changes while ensuring that all updates comply with food safety regulations.
- Data Management: Ensure all formulation data is accurately maintained and up to date within the company’s systems, providing reliable input for ongoing projects.
- Recipe Management: Keep recipe frameworks current and relevant and provide essential product information inputs for Product Developers to support new product launches.
- Project Delivery: Deliver formulation projects on time and within budget, adhering to the agreed cost targets and timelines.
- Intellectual Property Management: Proactively identify and manage Intellectual Property risks and opportunities related to pet food formulations, ensuring protection and compliance.
- Product Testing and Commercialization: Support the entire product development process, from bench testing and scale-up to commercialization, following the guidelines established in the Project Initiation Request. This includes optimizing product attributes, controlling development and production costs, and adhering to timelines. Assist with scheduling plant tests and determining product disposal, with on-site support during tests to gain product and process experience.
- Nutritional, Regulatory, and Compliance Support: Ensure that all product formulations meet nutritional adequacy and compliance standards by applying statistical data from key raw materials. Develop label decks considering all potential processing locations and regulatory guidelines. Submit products for analytical or animal testing as required and summarize the results.
- Process and Supply Chain Support: Provide support for process optimization and supply chain initiatives, including formula transfers among plants, evaluation of new raw material suppliers, and adjustments to existing materials and processing parameters. Assist in testing and troubleshooting to ensure consistent product quality.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Lead cross-functional teams throughout the new product development process, including briefing, ideation, exploration, and specification finalization.
- Project Management: Track and manage product development projects, regularly report on progress, and make actionable recommendations to ensure successful outcomes.
- Supplier Collaboration: Partner with external ingredient suppliers to achieve product development goals and explore opportunities for innovation.
- Risk Management: Effectively manage project risks, communicating and influencing the project team to make informed decisions that align with company goals.
- Functional Excellence: Build and maintain functional excellence in formulation systems, ensuring that FRL remains at the forefront of pet food formulation and contract manufacturing.
- Training & Support: Provide training and technical support to other associates and clients in areas of your expertise, ensuring knowledge transfer and the development of best practices within the team.

Work Schedule:
Full Time, Monday to Saturday, 10:00a.m. to 7:00pm. Hours may vary on occasion, depending on workload.

- Technical Experience: Demonstrated experience in food technology or a closely related technical field, with a proven track record of success.
