Dry eye syndrome has become a common chronic condition which affects millions of people worldwide to create eye discomfort and visual problems and reduce their life quality. Scientists now concentrate on bioactive compounds which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties because people want to find natural solutions that work effectively. This growing interest aligns with advancements in nutraceutical product development, where functional ingredients are studied for targeted health benefits.

What is Capsanthin?

The carotenoid family includes capsanthin which occurs naturally in paprika as its main source. The food colouring agent E160c contains capsanthin which serves as an antioxidant that helps combat inflammation and obesity. Cayenne pepper and certain plant species including chillies and asparagus.

The antioxidant properties of capsanthin protect cells from oxidative damage while blocking inflammatory cytokines to decrease chronic inflammation. The compound helps eye red pigment capsanthin exists primarily in paprika, but it also appears in red bell peppers and health through its ability to boost MPOD levels and protects eyes from blue and white light exposure. The compound helps with weight control through its ability to boost fat metabolism and maintain proper gut bacteria balance.

Capsanthin has potential benefits in cancer prevention, vascular inflammation, cholesterol levels, skincare, and diabetes management —making it a valuable ingredient in nutraceutical formulation development and nutraceutical science and innovation. [1]

Dry eyes:

Dry eyes, also known as dry eye disease, result from inadequate tear production or function, causing discomfort, burning sensations, redness, itchiness, blurred vision, watery eyes, and eye pain.

Intraocular pressure (IOP):

The measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) reveals eye fluid pressure which functions as a crucial marker for eye health assessment and glaucoma detection. The normal range for IOP measurements should fall between 10 and 21 mmHg because elevated pressure known as ocular hypertension can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss.

Risks of high IOP: Elevated IOP can lead to glaucoma, vision loss, and differing individual tolerance levels, with some developing damage at normal pressure levels and others unaffected by slightly elevated pressure.

Details

Publication

Journal of Food Biochemistry

Objective

Evaluate the effects of capsanthin on dry eye symptoms and intraocular pressure (IOP) in an animal model simulating screen-related eye strain

Animal Model

Albino Wistar rats

Supplementation

Daily capsanthin at low, medium, and high doses for 7 weeks

Key Measurements

– Intraocular Pressure (IOP) – Tear break-up time – Tear volume – Corneal inflammation – Inflammatory cytokine expression – Oxidative stress markers

Results – IOP

Significant decrease in IOP across all dose groups

Results – Tear Function

Increase in tear break-up time – Increase in tear volume

Results – Corneal Health

Decrease in corneal inflammation – Stabilization of ocular surface

Inflammatory Response

Inhibition of inflammatory cytokine expression

Oxidative Stress

Reduction in oxidative stress

Conclusion

Capsanthin effectively alleviates multiple dry eye symptoms and supports ocular health through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms

Commercial Product Mentioned

CapsiClear by Unibar – the only capsanthin-based product marketed for holistic eye health

Prior Human Data (CapsiClear)

– Decrease in IOP – Improved macular pigment optical density (MPOD) – Enhanced photo stress recovery – Protection from blue and white light

The findings highlight capsanthin’s value as a functional food ingredient in nutraceutical product development targeting eye health and visual comfort.

Market Insights and Outlook

The Capsanthin Market reached USD 104.35 million in 2023, and it is predicted to reach USD 118.69 million in 2024 while showing a 13.53% annual growth rate to reach USD 253.82 million by 2030

The research was led by Dr. Brian K. McFarlin, and found that of the 21 people in the study, those who received CapsiClear at a dose of 40 mg daily could potentially

  • Increase macular pigment density related to improved vision,
  • Decrease lightning response recovery time after exposure to bright light, and
  • Improve reading speed in light and dark environmental conditions. [3]

In a 28-day human clinical trial the researchers found that CapsiClear had a beneficial effect for regulating optimal intraocular eye pressure, and that in the study population, benefits were realized contrary to dose form but within low, medium, and high doses of 20, 40, and 80 mg respectively.

“After the first research at the University of North Texas, we did more benefit studies in animals with an observed reduction in intraocular pressure, and the potential for these benefits will be fantastic for all people, all ages,” said Mehta. “There are genetic deficiencies that can cause high eye pressure, which can ultimately lead to blurry vision and glaucoma-like symptoms later on.”

Tiea Zehnbauer, Unibar’s vice president of sales, stated that young adults should consider vision in their healthy aging plans. Very recent healthy aging conventions have migrated into a few market segments targeting even younger consumers.

“The aging population really needs it, because as we get older, our eyes get weaker and the body has more trouble absorbing nutrients we need from food alone,” Zehnbauer explained. “This really begins in middle age. However, here we have young people who are now exposed to a barrage of harmful light due to how much exposure they have to their computers and cell phones.”

The dietary supplement industry expects research on the benefits of CaspiClear to be published soon, along with additional human clinical studies still in progress, Mehta said.[4] [5]

Conclusion:

The results of the animal study published in the Journal of Food Biochemistry, support the potential use of capsanthin for dry eye symptom management and ocular health. Their results suggest that capsanthin, especially in a standardized format like CapsiClear, is an important natural compound with therapeutic value in dry eye and glaucoma. This study provided an opportunity to advance clinical development in natural eye health products, which would benefit from further investigation into capsanthin, a promising natural compound.
