Sugar-free peanut butter cups recalled due to undeclared pecans

Products Recalled: Russell Stover Chocolates’ Sugar-Free Peanut Butter Cups

Problem:

  • On February 28th 2023, Russell Stover recalled sugar-free peanut butter cups since they may contain sugar-free pecan delight, which was not mentioned on the product label.
  • The product may pose a health risk to people allergic to pecans and other tree nuts, which can be life-threatening.
  • The recall was initiated after the company was contacted by consumers complaining that a wrong product was placed in the packaging mentioned as sugar-free peanut butter cups.
  • An error from a co-packing firm led to packing individually wrapped pecan delights in the outer covering mentioned as peanut butter cups.
  • The label in the inner packaging accurately identifies the items as Sugar Free Pecan Delights, and the physical Sugar Free Pecan Delight product appears different from the Sugar-Free Peanut Butter Cup product.
  • Russell Stover has received no complaints of illness or allergic reactions related to this issue.
  •  Consumers are requested to contact Russell Stover Chocolates for a replacement product or a voucher [1].

Scientific Evidence:

  • Nuts, including pecans are implicated in immunoglobulin-E (IgE) mediated allergic reactions, which occur in early childhood and persist through adult life.
  • Consuming pecans, even in small amounts, can cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. The manifestations include pruritus (itchy skin), rash, hives (raised reddish areas on the skin),tingling sensation of the mouth and throat, swollen lips, runny nose and digestive symptoms like cramps, nausea or vomiting [2]

What Regulations Clarifies:

  • The FDA has implemented regulations to protect consumer health. Food businesses must follow the Standard Operating Procedures for new product development.
  • Food products must be labelled properly on the product. The following are some product labelling requirements-
  1. The type of allergen must be mentioned on the label. For example, if a product has listed tree nuts, the specific nut used in the product must be mentioned- like tree nut (cashewnut).
  2. The name of the food source must be mentioned within parenthesis after the name of the ingredient. Example: Lecithin (soy).
  3. A separate box mentioning the names of allergens must be included after ingredient list [3].
