Products Recalled:

Costa Coffee British Roast Chicken Salad Sandwich was recalled because it contains mustard which was not mentioned on the label. The Costa Coffee British Roast Chicken Salad Sandwich was produced by Costa Coffee (UK).

Problem:

  • The UK Food Standards Agency ordered an immediate recall on September 13, 2022. This product contains mustard, a known allergen that could cause reactions in susceptible individuals
  • The product has been recalled, and Costa Coffee has reached out to the concerned allergy support organisations, who will subsequently inform their members about the recall.
  • A point-of-sale notice that explains to its consumers the reason for recall and the measures to be implemented if the product has been bought has been issued by the company [1].

Scientific Evidence:

  • People allergic to mustard can experience symptoms like urticaria, facial angioedema, nausea, vomiting, hoarseness,  wheezing, dyspnea, swelling in the face and throat and anaphylaxis when they consume mustard.
  • Approximately 50% of patients with mustard allergy are also sensitised to mugwort pollen and various foods of the Rosaceae family, nuts, and legumes [2].

What Regulations Clarifies:

  • A Label must display caution and allergens present in the product
  • The law requires that any of the 14 allergens that constitute the ingredients must be clearly stated and emphasised on the ingredients list.
  • A different font, style, background colour or bold text can emphasise the font, which, in turn, helps the consumers know about the ingredients used to make a food product. It also assists susceptible individuals in avoiding particular food that may cause allergic reactions [3].
