From ingredient research to pilot-scale processing, we help you create scientifically validated wet diets that meet nutritional, sensory, and functional requirements for pets.
Wet pet food (also called wet diets, canned, pouched, or tray formats) is characterized by high water content, typically ≥65% (≥60% in Europe), similar to the hydration level of natural prey. This high moisture improves palatability, digestibility, and ease of feeding, especially for pets with dental or swallowing issues. Compared to dry or semi-moist diets, wet foods contain higher protein, phosphorus, sodium, and fat (on a dry matter basis). However, because of their low caloric density (0.7–1.4 kcal/g), they require larger portion sizes and generally cost more on a per-calorie basis.
Moist foods are produced by sealing ingredients in cans, trays, or pouches and cooking them inside the container to ensure sterility and shelf stability. Products are available in multiple textures such as loaf, pâté, chunks in gravy, mousse, or casserole. According to AAFCO and FEDIAF guidelines, wet diets should be nutritionally complete, microbially safe, and shelf-stable until opened.

At Food Research Lab, wet pet foods are developed with evidence-based formulation, nutrient profiling, and bioavailability studies, ensuring safety, nutrition, and market relevance.
The following are some advantages and points concerning the safe and effective use of wet foods:
At Food Research Lab, we recognize that nutritional quality alone is not enough — pets must also find the food enjoyable to eat. Palatability trials are therefore an essential part of our wet pet food development workflow. These trials evaluate acceptance, preference, and feeding behavior, ensuring that products are not only complete and balanced but also appealing for long-term feeding.
By combining scientific formulation with structured palatability testing, FRL guarantees that wet diets are nutritious, safe, and desirable to the pets they are designed for.

Pet Food
At FRL, we integrate science, innovation, and compliance to create wet pet food products that are both nutritionally complete and market-ready.
Without a doubt, wet diets can become complete and balanced meals for pets if they are formulated in a precise manner with stage-of-life-specific levels of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
Safe heat treatment (controlled retorting), pH adjustment, and packaging that is hermetically sealed work together to prevent the growth of microorganisms whilst keeping the nutrients intact.
Surely, renal support, digestive health, weight management, and hypoallergenic formulations are the possible designs of wet diets, accompanied by functional additives such as prebiotics, probiotics, and omega-3s.
Palatability is verified through controlled sensory trials, examining aroma release, texture, and flavor to be sure that the product is accepted by consumers, and while it maintains nutritional and functional integrity.
Indeed, high water content diets can be a cause of early satiety. Quantity modification or addition of supplemental food might be necessary for puppies and big-breed dogs to fully satisfy their energy and nutrient requirements.
