The new food safety standards for infant nutrition in India.

Sharing is caring!

Introduction:

In compliance with the Food Safety Standards Act of 2006, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issued an article in the “Gazette notification of Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) First Amendment Regulations, 2022” on August 31st, 2022. The Infant nutrition food regulation comes into effect from October 1st 2022, onwards.

Key takeaway:

The following modifications have been made to the document:

The “Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011” are replaced by the “Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020” in Regulation 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020.

Infant formula in powder form prepared without the addition of any vegetable oil, linoleate, vitamin E, or other additives may be labelled as “Infant Milk Food” under sub-regulation 2 of regulation 7.

The terms “pH adjusting agents” in regulation ten are suggested to be substituted with “Acidity regulators.”
