How is Functional Food regulated in Saudi Arabia?

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) oversees functional food regulations in Saudi Arabia. The SFDA is responsible for regulating and monitoring all food products sold in the country, including functional foods.

The SFDA has specific regulations for functional foods that are based on scientific evidence and are intended to promote health or prevent disease. These regulations require that functional foods and nutraceuticals undergo a comprehensive scientific evaluation before being approved for market sale.

To be approved as a functional food in Saudi Arabia, a product must meet the following criteria per Saudi Arabia food regulations:

  1. It must be safe for consumption.
  2. It must be based on scientific evidence that supports the claimed health benefits.
  3. The claims on the product must be clear and accurate.
  4. The product must be appropriately labelled, including information about the ingredients, nutritional value, and health claims.
  5. The product must not be marketed as a drug.

In addition to these regulations, functional foods in Saudi Arabia must also comply with general food regulations related to hygiene, food additives, and labelling.

Companies that produce functional foods must work closely with the SFDA and follow all regulations to ensure their products’ safety and efficacy and avoid any legal issues [1].
