United States: Chetak LLC Expands Nationwide Recall of Deep Brand Frozen Sprouted Beans Over Salmonella Risk

Recall Nov 14, 2025

Sprouted Beans Over Salmonella Risk

Category of the product: Sprouted moong dal

Type of the product: Food and beverage food borne illness

FDA announcement: July 16, 2025

Company announcement date: July 16, 2025

Brand name: Deep

Reason for announcement: Salmonella

Chetak LLC Group has voluntarily recalled several lots of its “Deep” brand frozen sprouted beans—specifically “Sprouted Mat (Moth) 16oz” and “Sprouted Moong (Mung) 16oz”—on a national level due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled products were distributed by Chetak New York LLC (Edison, NJ), Chetak San Francisco LLC (Union City, CA), Chetak Chicago LLC (Streamwood, IL), Chetak Orlando LLC (Kissimmee, FL), Chetak Los Angeles LLC (Pico Rivera, CA) and Zeenat Inc. (Sugarland, TX). The recalled Deep-branded products were widely distributed in retail stores nationwide.

Reason for warning:

Standard FDA sampling and inspection noticed Salmonella contamination in these frozen sprouted beans, which is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections, especially in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. The most common symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the infection may be invasive and result in severe illnesses, such as endocarditis, infections of the arteries, or arthritis. There have been no reported illnesses to Chetak LLC Group related to the recalled lots as of this announcement.  [1]

Root cause analysis:

The Chetak LLC Group recall stems from possible Salmonella contamination in Deep-brand frozen vegetables which the CDC investigates as part of an ongoing outbreak. The shared processing equipment most likely caused the contamination. The FDA has identified the exact products and lot codes and packaging details (flexible plastic bags) of the affected items.

  • Contamination source: The processing equipment shared between products likely caused the contamination that led to the recall.
  • Bacterial presence: Scientists detected Salmonella bacteria throughout the product samples.
  • Outbreak link: Whole genome sequencing (WGS) established that the Salmonella bacteria in product samples shared the same genetic pattern as the outbreak-causing strain. [2]

Issue Identified:

The recall was initiated after positive findings of Salmonella were detected in samples taken from the processing lots during normal FDA surveillance. Production of these products has halted while Chetak and FDA determine the source. No illnesses have been reported, but there is a risk to consumers, especially to those other susceptible individuals to foodborne illness.

FDA and CDC warning about the product:

July 17, 2025

The FDA, CDC, and state and local partners are working to identify Salmonella Anatum infections affecting people across multiple states through Deep-brand frozen sprouted mat and moong beans. Product testing in May 2025 confirmed the presence of the outbreak-causing Salmonella strain. The CDC has reported 11 illnesses across 10 states, with four out of six cases consuming these beans before their illness began. Four hospitalizations have been reported, but no deaths have been reported. The Chetak LLC Group has not received any reports of illnesses but FDA and CDC investigations show these products caused illnesses through laboratory and epidemiological evidence. The recalling firm has paused product production and distribution while FDA and Chetak LLC Group investigate the origin of the problem.

FRL Commentary:

The product recall shows that manufacturers need to keep their suppliers under control while conducting end-product tests to ensure dietary supplement safety during production and distribution. Regulatory oversight, combined with Good Manufacturing practices (GMP) and third-party analytical laboratories, safeguards public health by eliminating unapproved drug compounds from the market.

The Chetak LLC Group recall for Deep brand Sprouted Mat and Sprouted Moong frozen beans is a precautionary step to safeguard consumers from the risk of Salmonella. The recall reinforces the importance of stringent food safety practices, ongoing surveillance, and transparency in consumer communications.
