Recall of frozen Siluriformes from India by Delight Foods

Products Recalled: Frozen products named Seafood Delight FRESH FROZEN CATFISH STEAK IF, available in 2lb (908 grams) and packed in plastic bags, were recalled.

Problem

  • A total of 2,961 pounds of imported frozen Siluriformes (catfish) goods are being recalled by Delight Foods USA LLC, a distributor and the Importer of Record headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, and Delight Foods LLC, a distributor and the Importer of Record situated in San Jose, California.
  • According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the items were imported from India, which is not permitted to export Siluriformes products to the United States.
  • The items don’t have a USDA mark of inspection or an establishment number. These goods were sent to retail outlets all around the country.
  • The issue was identified during a regular FSIS inspection of imported goods.
  • Those who have purchased the products are instructed not to consume them. They must throw or return the product to the point of purchase [1].

Import Regulation:

  • According to federal law, each commercial shipment of imported meat, poultry, and egg products must be inspected before selling in the United States.
  • Each cargo is inspected by the FSIS for correct labelling, certification, overall condition, and any indications of tampering and to spot any product contaminated by transportation damage. Additional tasks performed by FSIS include physical product inspection, laboratory sampling for diseases, and testing for chemical residues on a random or for-cause basis.
  • The importer has up to 45 days (30 days for egg products) to arrange for the product to be destroyed for use as human food or exported/returned to the foreign country.
  • Other measures can include converting it to animal food and bringing it into compliance with FSIS requirements within the stipulated time. This applies to any product that does not meet FSIS requirements before being refused entry [2].
