Multivitamin gummies for children recalled due to undeclared soya

Products Recalled: Boots Kids Daily Health Multivitamins Strawberry Flavour – pack of 30 gummies are recalled.

Problem

  • Boots has recalled Boots Kids Daily Health Multivitamins Strawberry Flavoured gummies since they contain soya, which was not mentioned on the product label on February 23rd, 2023.
  • The product contains soya, which is not mentioned on the label, increasing the health risk to people allergic to soya.
  • Boots has been instructed to reach out to the appropriate allergy support groups, who will inform their members about the recall.
  • Additionally, the business has sent its consumers a point-of-sale notice. Consumers are informed in these notices why the product is being recalled and what they should do if they have already purchased it [1].

Scientific Evidence:

  • Consuming soya beans, even in small amounts, can cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. The manifestations include vomiting, diarrhoea, runny nose, cough and wheezing to more severe ones, like anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening [2].

What Regulations Clarifies:

  • A label must display caution and allergens present in the product.
  • The 14 food allergens required by law to be declared as ingredients in food products must be listed and highlighted in the ingredients list.
  • A different font, style, background colour, or text bolding may be used to highlight the allergens. These are beneficial for people with food allergies and intolerances who must avoid certain foods because they can help consumers learn more about the ingredients in packaged foods [3].
