Problem:

The product contains milk and sulphites, and this composition was not mentioned on the label. A health risk is possible for those allergic/ intolerant to milk or its components or sensitive to sulphites and sulphur dioxide [1].

Scientific Evidence:

  • Cow’s Milk Allergy (CMA) is a common allergy that frequently occurs in the first two years of life, particularly in the first year, in contrast to other allergies like peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish allergies that may arise later in life. While peanut and tree nut allergies are more likely to last into adulthood, most allergies, including CM allergies, are cured by themselves throughout childhood or adolescence.
  • Wheezing, vomiting, hives and digestive problems are the common symptoms of milk allergy. Milk allergy can also cause anaphylaxis [2].
  • Exposure to sulphites arises mainly from consuming foods and drinks containing these additives. Sulfites can also trigger reactions that are similar to allergies (intolerances), such as wheezing in asthmatics, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), and urticaria (hives). In sporadic cases, sulfites may cause anaphylaxis, the most severe type of allergic reaction [3].

What Regulations Clarifies:

  • The UK government mandates that any of the 14 allergens in pre-packaged food must be disclosed on the label.

Celery, cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, tree nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, soybeans

  • The allergen must be in some way emphasized when they have been listed on the label [4].
