INCI, International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients

The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) is a standardized system for naming cosmetic ingredients. It was established in the 1970s by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) and is now maintained by the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC).

The INCI system provides a consistent and internationally recognized set of names for cosmetic ingredients, helping to avoid confusion and miscommunication between different countries and languages. The names assigned to each ingredient are based on their chemical structure and function [1].

INCI names typically consist of the scientific or Latin name of the ingredient followed by an English translation of the name in parentheses. For example, the INCI name for vitamin E is "Tocopherol (Vitamin E)".

The INCI system is mandatory in the European Union and many other countries and is widely used by cosmetic manufacturers and regulatory bodies worldwide [2].
