The nutritional quality of pet food is defined by its formulation, not its form. However, pets and owners often prefer certain types. Below is a summary of common pet food formats that FRL has capability to undertake:
Dry Food (Kibble):
It’s economical, easy to use, has a long shelf life, and is safe at room temperature for 1‐3 hours unless moistened. In addition, it requires very little prep and storage time.
Semi-Moist Food:
More appetizing than dry food because of increased moisture, semi‐moist diets have lost popularity and are now much more difficult to find in the marketplace.
Canned Food (Moist):
Canned food provides more moisture, protein, and fat than dry food and is therefore more appetizing. It is good for pets with specific dietary requirements or fussy eaters. [1]
Moist Food for Dogs:
This product provides a good deal of hydration and is easier to chew or swallow so it is a good choice for senior dogs or dogs with oral problems. It can be used as a complete diet or just a special treat. [2]
Fresh Pet Food:
Fresh food is made from cooked whole ingredients, which means that it is very appetizing but falls short in vitamins and minerals and you must add other products to complete the diet. Fresh foods are often well portioned but are at the higher end of the diet price range.
Commercial Raw Food:
Raw food is available frozen and freeze-dried and contains meat, bones, fruits, and herbs. A complete diet gives the full nutrient profile, containing approximately 65% moisture compared to dry food. The ingredients are minced, mixed, then deep-frozen. [3]
Dog Biscuits and Treats:
Dog biscuits are similar to human snacks, in that they come in various sizes, textures, and flavors. They can be used for training, but also as a reward, and usually promote some health function, like dental care. [4]
Functional Pet Food – Scrumbles:
Scrumbles is a functional food targeting gut health, adding prebiotics and probiotics (Enterococcus faecium; 1 billion CFU/kg). The formulation improves digestion and nutrient uptake, with the inspiration being from the founders’ own pet that suffered digestive challenges. [5]
Freeze-Dried Food:
An easy alternative to raw food, freeze-dried include removing the moisture by freezing then directly vacuum drying the raw ingredients. It is effective in preventing microbial growth but does not get rid of bacterial pathogens. [3]
Dietary-Specific Pet Food:
Food that is formulated to specific dietary needs is available to support allergies and sensitivities, for gluten sensitive, hypoallergenic, grain free, low-fat, vegetarian, and sensitive stomach to beable to help a pet with their specific health needs. [6]
